My favorite part of this video is the verse in Matthew where Jesus said, “If you wish to be perfect, go and sell your possessions and give the money to the poor…unless a couple of dudes register at Pottery Barn, in which case, fuck the poor.”

In keeping with my last comment, another favorite heretical hobby of mine is deliberately misquoting the Bible, including words of Christ (or attributing the words to Christ regardless), basically to the effect of the quote you cite.

Did you follow the conversation about this over at Halden’s blog? It was absurd. People’s defense of the Catholic Church was a great case study for ideology at its purest.

I glanced briefly at it. It seemed like Halden was calling a spade a spade, and then some people were introducing some complexities into the situation regarding the Catholic Church and its acceptance of money from the state, and so on. While I’m sure it might be somewhat more complex, that doesn’t change the fact that the Church is (shamefully) leveraging social services in a war of ideology, which was what I took Halden’s basic point to be.

The whole thing was amazing to me as well. Turns out that no matter what the Catholic church does there’s always some super-nuanced, majorly complex other thing going on that no one in the world could possibly understand unless they were Catholic.
So yeah, ideology.

Yeah, I live in the DC area and read about the controversy in the Post. It really sounds like that the issue was cut and dry. Basically the Catholic church was leveraging the poor for ideological reasons, pretty sad that other Catholics could not stand up and denounce the church where it fails to live up the Gospel.
